Open the Shadow Simulator at initial.app/shadows. Use it to answer these, then try it outside.

  1. Choose your own latitude and today's date. Write a 1 m stick's shadow at 9:00, noon and 3:00 by the Sun.
  2. At what time is the shadow shortest? In which direction does it point then?
  3. Choose the December solstice. How does the noon shadow compare with June's?
  4. A person 1.7 m tall stands where the Sun is 30 degrees up. Work out their shadow's length, then check it in the simulator.
  5. Outside: stand a stick in the ground and mark the tip of its shadow every 30 minutes. Draw what you find.
