Open the Moon Phases Simulator at initial.app/moon-phases. Use it to answer these.

  1. Draw the Moon at each of the eight phases, in order, as seen from the Northern Hemisphere.
  2. Where is the Moon, compared with the Sun and Earth, at full moon?
  3. Set the phase to first quarter. At about what time does the Moon rise? When does it set?
  4. Set the time to noon. Name two phases you could see in the daytime sky.
  5. A friend says the phases are caused by Earth's shadow. Use the simulator to explain why that is wrong.
  6. Tonight's Moon: press the button, write its phase, and go and check it. Were you right?
